Nazar Voloshyn, Ukrainian military spokesman, said on May 13 that Kiev had dismissed the commander responsible for protecting the front line in Kharkov after Russia launched a surprise attack in the area since the middle of last week.
Mr. Voloshyn told RBC-Ukraine that Kiev also decided to appoint Brigadier General Mykhailo Drapatyi on May 11.
This information comes in the context that Russia has continuously announced in recent days that it has gained control of villages on the border of the two countries from Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian soldiers told the BBC that, in some areas in Kharkiv, Russia can easily cross without any problems because Kiev completely lacks the first line of defense, which is minefields.
Russia said on May 12 that it had captured four more villages in the Kharkiv area, while thousands of local residents were forced to evacuate as the fighting heated up.
Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov said on May 13 that Russian forces were attacking the northern border of Ukraine in small groups to try to stretch the front line.
`Russia is deliberately lengthening it (the front line), attacking in small groups, but in new directions, so to speak,` said Oleh Syniehubov.
He added that Ukrainian forces were holding back Russian troops but fighting still threatened to spread to other settlements.

Explaining information about the loose defense system in Vovchansk, Kharkov, Mr. Tamaz Gambarashvili, head of the city’s Military Administration, confirmed that Kiev has built fortifications around the city bordering Russia.
`Fortifications were built. And now they are still being built and reinforced. But the situation was and is extremely difficult. Because the city itself is very close to the border. And it is very difficult to carry out
He also admitted that the fortifications that Ukraine built were `probably not too dense`.
`Everything is built up, but not too densely. Vovchansk has been attacked non-stop for over a year and a half with mortars and artillery. That’s why I repeat again: Vovchansk is 4 miles from the border
Since the beginning of 2024, Ukraine has spent 20 billion UAH (524 million USD) to build fortifications in areas to stop Russia’s advance.
